DOLPHIN CONNECTION TEXAS

INGLESIDE ON THE BAY, TEXAS

08/06/10Dolphins love jello!
August is always one of the best months of the year for dolphin watching. Winds are down and the blue is smooth. This month has brought us two more baby dolphins. What a treat. Yesterday we were out in the blue on a nine o'clock tour. Most of the time the dolphins are very busy eating behind the shrimp boats in the morning. But not this day. Most of the nursery group had come together for what could only be described as a play date. Babies were everywhere, playing and jumping all around our boat. What a hoot! Bright pink bellies and lots of action. A little girl, maybe six years old and her parents could not believe it was happening. She would screech each time they would jump or float inches from her hand. She told me, they would love some jello. I asked her, "Why would you think such a thing?" Her mother said, they had gone to one of those places that kept dolphins in a tank, and they fed them jello. I explain to her that captive dolphins were forced to work for a living. Their job was to amuse and entertain people day after day, and were paid with food. I told her, the truth is, free dolphins eat only fish. They eat as much as they want, when they want and nothing is required of them. She was left with a very puzzled look on her face. Didn't say a word and then said, This is much better. I asked her why? Her answer was simple. "They are with their family and friends and they are happier." She's only six years old. There's hope!
